Sharing grocery prices
How shared grocery prices work, what is shared, and how to stop sharing.
The Grocery page can show what an item on your list usually costs in your region, from prices other KiwiBudget shoppers have shared. The prices come only from KiwiBudget users, not from the supermarkets. It’s early days, so most items won’t have a shared price yet.
What is shared
Price sharing is off until you turn it on, on the Grocery page or in Settings, Privacy.
When it’s on, and you share the price of an item you tick off on your list, we add the item name, the price for one (or per kg), the shop, your region and the date. Never your full name, your email or your list. Other shoppers may see your initials (like JR) next to the date of the newest price.
Health and personal items we recognise, like pain relief, pregnancy tests and condoms, aren’t shared.
You can see shared prices whether or not you share your own.
What other shoppers see
Other people see a price only once at least three different shoppers in your region have shared that item in the last 90 days. They see the typical price, how many shoppers it comes from and the date of the newest price, and each shopper counts once. Your own prices never count in what you see.
Store comparisons only use items priced by at least three shoppers at each shop. Prices vary by store and change with specials, so check at the shelf.
Turning it off
Turning sharing off stops anything new being shared. Prices you’ve already shared stay in the pool, only ever shown as part of typical prices and store comparisons. Closing your account deletes them, or email privacy@kiwibudget.nz and we’ll remove them.
