Christmas on a budget in NZ: a payday-by-payday plan

By KiwiBudget Team ·

Christmas in New Zealand lands on top of summer: presents, food, travel, the holidays, and then back-to-school costs in late January. It's a lot to pay for in a few weeks. The easiest way to take the stress out of it is to stop thinking about one big December bill, and spread it across the paydays you have left.

1. Count your paydays to Christmas

Grab a calendar and count how many pays you'll get between now and the week before Christmas. Between early November and then, that's roughly:

  • Paid weekly: about 6 or 7 pays
  • Paid fortnightly: 3 or 4 pays
  • Paid monthly: 1 or 2 pays

That number is the key to the whole plan.

2. Write down everything Christmas will cost

Be honest and include the bits that sneak up on you:

  • Gifts, and the wrapping, cards and postage that go with them
  • Christmas Day food and drinks, plus any you're bringing to someone else's
  • Work and school end-of-year events
  • Travel to family: petrol, ferry or flights
  • Summer holiday plans
  • Back-to-school costs at the end of January: uniforms, stationery, devices, fees

3. Divide by your paydays

Add it all up and divide by the number of pays you counted. That's the amount to set aside each payday.

Example (made up): $900 for gifts, food and travel, paid fortnightly with 3 pays to go, is $300 a pay. If that's too much, it tells you early, while there's still time to trim the list rather than reach for a credit card or buy now, pay later.

4. Plan for the January gap

This is the part that catches people out. Some workplaces pay early before Christmas, and then it can be a long time until the first pay in January. Check your pay dates over the holidays now, and make sure the money for rent, bills and food in early January is set aside before it goes on presents.

5. Keep it in one place you can see

Put the Christmas money in a separate account or savings goal so it doesn't quietly get spent on everyday things. Seeing it build up each payday is surprisingly motivating.

How KiwiBudget helps

Quick answers

How much should I budget for Christmas?

There's no right number. Start from what you can set aside each payday between now and Christmas, then fit the list to that, rather than the other way round.

Is it too late to start a Christmas budget in November?

No. Even three fortnightly pays is enough to spread the cost, and starting now means you know where you stand before December.

What about back-to-school costs?

Add them to the same plan. They arrive in late January, often before the first full pay of the year.
