Connect your NZ bank securely
Learn how to safely connect and keep your transactions up to date.
KiwiBudget connects to your bank through Akahu, New Zealand’s open finance platform (the same one companies like Sharesies use). You never give KiwiBudget your bank login, and the connection is read-only: the app can see transactions to help you budget, but it can never move money, make payments, or change anything at your bank.
The full detail, including exactly what access you grant and for how long, is on how bank connections work.
Before you connect
Bank connections require two-factor authentication. The app will walk you through setting up a free authenticator app (like Google Authenticator) the first time - it takes about a minute, and it means a password alone can never unlock your bank data.
Bank sync is available on Sync, Student, Pro and Legend plans.
Connecting
- Go to More, then Accounts & Bank Sync.
- Tap "Connect bank" and enter your authenticator code when asked.
- Follow the Akahu flow to choose your bank and approve the connection.
- Your accounts and recent transactions appear on the dashboard, and stay up to date with each sync.
Disconnecting
You can switch the connection off any time: unlink inside KiwiBudget (Accounts & Bank Sync), or revoke it at my.akahu.nz. We also automatically disconnect connections that have not synced in a while, rather than quietly holding on to them.
